A Great Britain operating licence is a set of enforceable conditions, and a good number of them exist for the player rather than for the state. Knowing which are obligations rather than gestures changes what you can ask for and what to do when it is not provided.
If you want help now rather than a comparison of tools: the National Gambling Helpline is 0808 8020 133, free, confidential and open 24 hours a day, run by GamCare. BeGambleAware carries information and routes into treatment.
Inside the account
Deposit limits must be offered by every Great Britain licensee, usually per day, week and month. The asymmetry in how they change is the important part: a reduction takes effect immediately, while an increase is held for a cooling-off period and then has to be actively confirmed before it applies. That design exists because the moment you most want to raise a limit is the moment the limit is working. Setting one while calm is a decision taken on behalf of a version of you who will be less calm later.
Reality checks interrupt play at an interval you choose with a summary of elapsed time and your net position. They are easy to dismiss on autopilot, and an interval long enough that you actually read the message beats a short one you learn to tap away.
Time-outs lock the account for a fixed short period — commonly anything from a day up to six weeks — and cannot be lifted early. A time-out is the right instrument for a bad evening. It is not the right instrument for a pattern.
Self-exclusion at a single operator runs for a minimum of six months, closes the account, removes you from that operator's marketing, and prevents the account being reopened during the period. It covers one company, which is precisely why the national scheme exists.
Beyond the tools, operators are required to monitor for indicators of harm and to act on them. That is why an intervention message or a limit imposed on you can arrive unrequested; it is a licence condition being discharged rather than a customer service decision.
GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP is the free national online self-exclusion scheme. Every operator licensed to offer online gambling to Great Britain must be signed up to it, so a single registration excludes you from all of them at once. You choose six months, one year or five years.
Three things to know before registering.
It cannot be cancelled early. Once the minimum period is running, it runs. That is the mechanism, not a flaw in it.
It does not lapse quietly. When the chosen period ends the exclusion continues until you actively contact GAMSTOP to lift it, and there is a further cooling-off delay after that request before accounts become accessible.
Its scope is the GB online licensing regime. It does not reach sites operating outside that regime, and it does not cover betting shops, casinos or arcades in person, which are handled by separate schemes for physical premises.
That first gap is the reason "not on GAMSTOP" is used as advertising, and the reason it should be read as a statement that a site is outside the regime rather than as a feature. It is also the practical argument for adding the two layers below.
Your bank, and your device
Most major UK banks now offer a gambling transaction block in their app, which declines card payments to merchants coded as gambling. It is free, takes moments to switch on, and many banks apply a cooling-off delay before it can be turned off again, which is the part that gives it teeth. Two limits: it works on merchant category codes, so it stops card payments rather than every possible route money can travel, and it applies to the account you set it on rather than to you.
Blocking software stops gambling sites and apps loading at all, which removes the moment of decision instead of relying on you to win it. BetBlocker is free, provided by a registered charity, works across several devices and can be set to a period you cannot shorten. Install it on everything, including the devices you would not think of as gambling devices — a block on the phone but not the laptop is a speed bump.
Rules that apply whether you use anything or not
Some protections are structural, and they are also useful verification signals, because a site aimed at UK players that ignores them is telling you which regime it is in.
Gambling with a credit card has been prohibited in Great Britain since April 2020.
Online slots have been subject to design rules since October 2021: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop features, a minimum spin duration, no celebration of returns equal to or below the stake with win sounds and animations, no playing multiple slots simultaneously, and a requirement to display elapsed time and net position during play.
Great Britain has also introduced a maximum stake per spin on online slots, set lower for players aged 18 to 24 than for older adults — the current figures are published by the Gambling Commission and are worth reading from the source rather than from a secondary summary, because this is a recent and still-evolving area.
None of these change a game's mathematical return. All of them change how much money passes through a game in an evening, which is the variable that determines what a session costs. The bankroll tool shows why speed matters more than the return figure people focus on.
Where free help comes from
GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, free and confidential, 24 hours a day, with live chat as well as phone. It also supports family members and others affected by someone else's gambling, which is help in its own right rather than a route to fixing the gambler.
BeGambleAware publishes information and connects people to treatment across Britain.
NHS gambling services operate specialist clinics in a number of regions alongside the wider network of commissioned treatment services. Referral routes vary locally; a GP or the helpline can point you to the right one.
Gordon Moody provides intensive and residential treatment for severe gambling harm.
All of it is free at the point of use, and none of it requires you to have reached any particular threshold first. The helpline is a reasonable place to start even when you are unsure the question is serious enough to ask.
The honest framing
Tools do not fix anything on their own. They buy time and remove opportunity while something else changes. The reverse is also true and less often said: willpower applied to a product engineered for engagement, available in your pocket at three in the morning, is not a fair contest, and declining to have that contest is not a failure of character.
If any of this is familiar — playing longer than intended, going back to recover losses, hiding the amounts, borrowing to fund it, or finding that the size of the stakes has stopped registering — those are recognised markers rather than a verdict on you, and the helpline exists for exactly them.
18+. The expected outcome of gambling is a loss. Never stake money you cannot afford to lose, and never gamble to make money.
