There is a reason almost every page you find when searching for a casino is a ranked list. Start with the register, not the site
The single most useful fact about gambling regulation in Great Britain is that the licence list is public. The Gambling Commission publishes a searchable register of every business licensed to offer gambling here, what each is licensed to do, whether the licence is currently in force, and the website domains the licensee has told the Commission it operates.
That last field is the one that matters and the one nobody checks. A licence belongs to a company, and the register records the domains that company runs under it. A site being operated by a licensed business is not the same thing as this domain appearing on that business's register entry. Read the register entry first and arrive at the site knowing what you should find, rather than reading the site's footer and hoping.
Which brings us to badges. A licensing badge, a testing-agency seal, a "secure and fair" roundel — these are image files. Anybody can save one and put it in a footer, and unlicensed sites routinely do, sometimes with a live-looking licence number attached. A badge is a claim. The register is a record.
